Winter Events in the Bay Area

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the song says. No matter what you celebrate, the winter is a transformative time. The days grow shorter and the promise of a whole new year is on the horizon. If you’re new to the Bay Area, or even if you’ve been here a while and have run out of fun winte revents or ideas, here is a guide to help you find things to do. Whether you love the beach or the mountains, or you’d rather stay in the city, here are several winter events in the Bay Area to enjoy.

Winter Surfing

Did you know that wintertime is huge for surfing? If you’ve just moved to the area, it may not have occurred to you. But the waves are high and the surfers love it. If you’ve never surfed before, this may not be the best time of year to learn, but if you’re a pro grab your board and wetsuit and head out.

Since the air temperature will be significantly warmer than the water, a day out to picnic on the beach and watch the surfers can also be a lot of fun.

Great America Winterfest

California’s Great America is one of the biggest and best theme parks in the country. It has a long history in the area and every winter it transforms into a winter wonderland throughout December.

Attractions include skating by the historic carousel and visits with Santa. There are a number of Peanuts-themed activities including the “Peanuts Guide to Christmas” and “Charlie Brown’s Tree Lot.” Enjoy the holiday concerts and plenty of themed food at the cafes around the park.

Go Ice Skating

Great America isn’t the only opportunity you’ll have to go skating this season. California is the perfect spot for some outdoor ice skating since the air won’t be so cold your face will freeze off.

There are so many options to choose from, we can’t list them all here. Here’s a great roundup of the ice skating opportunities throughout the Bay Area.

Visit the Sea Lions at Pier 39

The sea lions at Pier 39 are a year-round attraction, but did you know they congregate there more in the winter time? If you want to get a great view of these adorable barking water puppies basking in the sun, December is a great time.

Of course, Pier 39 isn’t just about the sea lions, though they are a big draw. There are shops, restaurants, and other entertainment venues you can explore while out on the pier.

SF Sketchfest

If you like comedy and want to stay inside when the weather is a little chillier, don’t miss the SF Sketchfest. The event runs throughout January, so it’s a great way to inject a little fun into the winter once the holiday season is over.

Visit the SF Sketchfest website to learn more about the lineup and venues.

Lake Tahoe

Originally, we were going to mention skiing opportunities in this final section, but then we realized we were missing out on a huge chunk of winter fun in the area. While it’s a bit of a drive from San Francisco, Lake Tahoe has everything you would want in terms of winter fun.

There are several lodges and resorts, which host all kinds of winter events and activities. If you want to experience the snow, this is the best place to be.
