The Science of Gratitude This Thanksgiving

I’ve noticed a trend online and in many businesses across the country: people are building a culture of gratitude but I’m concerned that we’re losing the essence of what gratitude is. I don’t want it to sound like I think these practices are disingenuous, but I also want to be sure that people are mindful of gratitude in their day-to-day interactions as well. It was interesting to me to learn a little about the science of gratitude and how it impacts us today and throughout our lives. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, here are some things to think about.

People Who Are Thankful Are Happier

There’s a saying i saw on one of those decorative and motivational signs once: “It’s not happy people who are thankful, it’s thankful people who are happy.” And we really strive to live by this. Did you know that studies have shown that keeping a gratitude journal will add value to your long-term well-being? It enhances your health, emotions, career, and relationships. That’s right, even just thinking, “thank you” can make you happier overall. Imagine the benefits of saying it to yourself, your friends and family, and even strangers.

Gratitude Improves Our Health

In a study written in 2007, patients suffering from high blood pressure were instructed to count their blessings once a week. During this exercise, their systolic blood pressure significantly decreased. If you’re feeling stressed, take a moment to think about the good things in your life. Breathe deep, think of just three things for which you’re grateful, and be mindful of them.

There is some evidence that regularly practiced gratitude helps you sleep, gives you more energy, and can combat depression and anxiety.

Gratitude is Good for the Mind

Think about two memories you have. Imagine one of your best memories. What do you remember most about that experience? How did you feel? Next, imagine a less pleasant memory. What was your mindset at that time?

Gratitude can actually help us retain better memories or even impact our memories to make us focus more on those that give us pleasant feelings.

It also helps us stay more optimistic in the present. While not every day will be a great day, focusing on the positive rather than the negative will help us maintain a better mental mindset so you can come back and have better days.

Being Thankful Toward Others Improves Relationships

And, here’s the real take away. Being thankful will improve all of your relationships. Seriously, just give it a try. Have you told your partner lately that you appreciate them? Have you talked to your kids about how glad you are that they’re in your life? When you make someone feel good about themselves, you’ll feel good about yourself as well.

Try it with everyone around you. Thank the people you work with. Thank the service industry employees you see when you go out to eat or get drinks at the bar or coffee shop. Thank people who hold the door for you. Gratitude is also contagious, so when you start thanking others, you’ll notice that more people are thankful as well.
