Preparing for Natural Disasters in California
Living in California, you’re keenly aware of the risk of natural disasters. Most specifically, the possibility of an earthquake at any point. Of course, there are other disasters that have impacted California residents, like wildfires. How can you be more prepared at home if these kinds of things happen? Here are a few tips to be prepared in case of natural disasters.
Create A Family Plan
Step one, whether it’s for earthquakes or wild fires or any other type of natural disasters, is to make a family plan. Determine the steps you would take to leave your home or protect yourself depending on the type of disaster.
Once you have a plan in place, be sure to talk with everyone who lives in your home. This is especially important for young children so they understand what to do in case an event happens in the home. The idea is to remain calm and have expectations in place so panic doesn’t increase the risk of disaster.
Practice
Another way to reduce a panicked response is to practice the family plan. For example, the process of evacuating during a fire is very different than what do if an earthquake were to happen. Make sure everyone knows the plans for each and be would able to act on them calmly. When families panic, there is more risk of danger.
For example, if there is a fire in the home make sure there’s a place outside where children can meet so even if they get out of the house without a parent, they know where to go and to stay put. For earthquakes, talk about safe structural areas of the home where they can retreat.
Create a Supply Kit
Whether the situation involves evacuation or not, make sure you have a supply kit available. At the very least, this should be a basic first aid kit. For larger concerns, such as the spread of a wildfire, be prepared to take the essentials with you as you leave your home.
You should have a kit in place that has everything you need for every member of your family. This may include medications that are necessary. Don’t forget to pack a safety kit for your pet!
Find Resources
If the situation causes you to leave your home, you may want a network in place that can help you in case of emergency. Sure, the bay area will have resources and shelters but you may be more comfortable driving to other friends or family.
Know where these safe spots are and communicate with your loved ones throughout the evacuation process.
Learn First Aid
It may also be helpful for you to learn first aid. There are plenty of places around the Bay Area that you can take classes and become certified. In case of emergency, for a loved one or a stranger, you may be the person who can help.

Volunteer
Of course, not every disaster will require a complete bug out situation or you may be fortunate enough to escape damage or injury. If that’s the case, you can always help out by volunteering. There are always collections and other functions set up in the wake of a natural disaster.
When you give your time to the community, you’re doing more than just helping others. You’re also helping yourself. Volunteering is good for your mind, body, and spirit.
